In the towering city of Metropolis, the powerful live in gardens above the clouds while workers run the machines underground. Freder, son of the city's master, descends into the depths and meets Maria, who preaches the coming of a mediator between both worlds. To stop her, an inventor builds a machine woman wearing her face. Fritz Lang created cinema's first great science-fiction epic.
